Green Jobs? Where’s the Beef?
Because of the Obama stimulus package, green jobs are getting lots of buzz in the news. But there’s a variety of ways to define this complex subject, and Jerry Yudelson offers important insights. For example, he explains which green jobs will make the biggest difference in terms of their benefits for both the economy and the environment.
In order to share his unique perspectives on the rapidly expanding green jobs marketplace, Jerry has created a new YouTube video and Yudelson Associates has created a new white paper.
To view the brief video (approximately 1:30) of highlights of Jerry Yudelson’s perspective on green jobs, click here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=U9fNJTETWBE.

Helping Companies Go Green: New Corporate Sustainability Planning White Paper
Another new white paper from Yudelson Associates, “A Ten Step Program for Corporate Sustainability” illuminates the basics of this important discipline. This document is designed to get companies started on the road to planning and implementing cost-effective, environmentally friendly green building practices.
Our Ten Step Program maps the process, starting with setting a vision, organizing a task force and examining a company’s green options. It then parses the intermediate steps such as adopting specific green initiatives, staffing them and training the participants along with instituting green building practices and company-wide, green operations. Finally, the paper lays out the final stages of the process, which includes effective communications and continuous improvement in an organization’s overall sustainability practices.

Retail Green Building Project Profile: Cabot Circus, Bristol, U.K.

The first BREEAM Excellent retail project in the U.K. is the Cabot Circus project in Bristol. Cabot Circus provides nearly 1 million sq.ft. (93,000-sq.m.) of new retail space within a 1.5 million-sq.ft. (139,353-sq.m.) mixed-use master plan occupying a 36-acre site. It is a leading example of a comprehensively mixed-use scheme with nine different uses: retail, catering, leisure, offices, market housing, affordable housing, student housing, hotel, and car parking. The project represents a £500 million ($750 million) investment by The Bristol Alliance—a partnership between Land Securities and Hammerson, two British Real Estate Investment Trusts. In addition, other entities provided a further £100 million of development within the master plan. Key environmental achievements include:
- 85 percent of waste was recycled during construction including store fit-out waste
- Lighting energy use reduction through intelligent lighting controls
- Sustainable tenant fit-out guidance and assessment document
- Rainwater harvesting system
The Business Case For Green Building Just Gets Stronger
Check out the chapters on this subject, from The Green Building Revolution, Jerry Yudelson’s chronicle of the evolution of the green building industry. While these components have always been there, emerging trends favor such benefits as productivity and health gains, marketing, political approvals, recruitment and retention of key employees, securing financing and risk management, that collectively argue even more strongly for green buildings.
